Have you ever wanted to turn your thoughts, memories, or personal experiences into something creative?
Join professional choreographer and multidisciplinary artist Sheena Chundee for a four-week online course exploring the art of spoken word, storytelling, and sound.
Whether you're completely new to creative writing or simply looking for a different way to express yourself, this course offers a relaxed, supportive environment to experiment with words, rhythm, voice, and sound.
Inspired by the themes and creative processes behind one of Sheena's original contemporary dance works, the course explores ideas around identity, expectations, personal narratives, and finding your authentic voice.
Across four weekly two-hour sessions, you'll develop your own original spoken word piece, discover techniques for bringing your writing to life, and explore how sound can add atmosphere, emotion, and depth to your words.
What makes this course different?
You'll have the opportunity to develop your spoken word piece alongside your own personalised soundscape.
Everyone begins with the same original soundscape, specially created for the course. As your writing develops, Sheena will make small adjustments and additions to the soundscape to reflect the mood, themes, and direction of your individual piece.
By the end of the course, you'll have your own spoken word creation accompanied by an individually adapted soundscape.
No previous writing, poetry, music, or performance experience is required.
What You'll Learn
Week 1: Finding Your Story
Explore the foundations of spoken word and discover how everyday language, personal experiences, and storytelling can become powerful creative material.
Through guided writing exercises, you'll explore themes such as identity, memories, expectations, and self-expression.
You'll begin developing ideas for your own original spoken word piece, drawing on personal experiences or imagined stories.
Week 2: Shaping Your Words
Take your initial ideas further and begin structuring your spoken word piece.
Explore creative writing techniques including imagery, repetition, rhythm, contrast, and storytelling structure.
Discover how word choices, sentence lengths, and repetition can change the meaning and emotional impact of your writing.
By the end of this session, you'll have a working draft of your piece.
Week 3: Bringing Words to Life
Discover how your voice can transform the words on the page.
Experiment with vocal expression, pacing, pauses, emphasis, and rhythm, exploring how different delivery techniques can influence the way a story is experienced.
You'll also be introduced to the course's original soundscape and explore how sound can complement your writing.
As your piece takes shape, Sheena will begin making small adjustments and additions to the shared soundscape, taking inspiration from your individual creative direction.
Week 4: Words Meet Sound
Bring everything together as you refine your spoken word piece and explore how your words and individual soundscape work alongside one another.
Experiment with vocal delivery, timing, and atmosphere, and discover how sound can support the emotion and storytelling within your work.
There will be an opportunity to share your piece with the group in a relaxed, supportive environment. Sharing is entirely optional.
By the end of the course, you'll have developed your own spoken word piece and an individually adapted soundscape to accompany it.
Your Personalised Soundscape – What's Included
All participants begin with the same original soundscape, created specifically for this course.
Throughout the four weeks, Sheena will make small adjustments and additions to each participant's version, responding to the themes, mood, and creative direction of their spoken word piece.
These adaptations may include subtle changes to sound layers, textures, rhythm, or atmosphere.
Please note:
  • The soundscapes are personalised adaptations of an existing composition, rather than entirely new compositions created from scratch.
  • All individual adjustments and additions will be completed during the four-week course.
  • Your final adapted soundscape will be provided as an audio file after the course concludes.
  • Any further editing, changes, or additions requested after the course will need to be undertaken by the participant independently.
  • Soundscapes are provided for personal, non-commercial creative use. Public distribution or commercial use requires separate permission.
By the end of the four weeks, you'll have:
  • Your own original spoken word piece.
  • An individually adapted soundscape to accompany your writing.
  • Practical creative writing and storytelling techniques.
  • An understanding of how to use rhythm, pacing, and vocal expression.
  • Greater confidence in expressing ideas through spoken word.
  • A new perspective on how writing and sound can work together creatively.
Who Is This Course For?
This course is designed for adults of all creative backgrounds, including complete beginners.
It's ideal for anyone interested in creative writing, poetry, storytelling, personal expression, or experimenting with new artistic techniques.
You don't need to be a confident writer, performer, or public speaker. The focus is on creative exploration rather than producing a polished performance.
Class size: Small group to allow individual creative guidance.
This is a live, interactive course with guided exercises, group discussion, individual writing time, and optional opportunities to share your work.
Participants are encouraged to attend all four sessions, as each week builds on the previous one.
Please note the Zoom meeting will be locked 5 minutes after the start time to avoid distractions. Please make sure to log on at least 5 minutes before the session starts.
Recordings of sessions will not be provided.
Transfers to other sessions will not be available if a class is missed.

About me!
I commenced my dance journey at the tender age of 5, eventually earning a scholarship to The Royal Ballet London) and transitioning to full-time training by age 11. Alongside my rigorous training, I performed with The Royal Ballet Company and various European dance companies, also delving into choreography and pioneering roles in new productions.
In the early 2000s, I embarked on curating and facilitating creative workshops for community organizations, striving to democratize the arts and extend its reach to underprivileged communities. This endeavor involved collaboration with company directors, educators, and health professionals to craft inclusive and educational arts programs.
Augmenting my dance background, I pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Creative Writing, nurturing her passion for literature, writing, and poetry. Concurrently, she assumed the role of Assistant Manager at a West End Theatre, overseeing daily operations and Front of House management. My involvement in community radio sparked an interest in sound engineering, leading her to earn a diploma and subsequently work in the live music industry.
Upon relocating to Melbourne in 2009, I leveraged my extensive experience and network in the arts to establish Rebel Stepz. This multicultural arts organization comprises diverse talents spanning theater technicians, set and costume designers, dancers, choreographers, musicians, writers, and artists. Together with Rebel Stepz, I curate events, workshops, programs, and production packages, catering to various projects all over the world.
I persist in my multifaceted roles as a choreographer, facilitator, event manager, producer and mentor. Continuously evolving, I am presently immersed in the study of sports psychology, aiming to apply my insights to support artists and performers in their endeavors.
