You will walk away with not only possibly the most comfortable outdoor chair you have ever sat in, but one you’ve built yourself. You will also gain a range of skills and knowledge that will leave you ready to tackle a range of furniture projects of your own. • To make it a little easier to transport home, the chair can be slightly disassembled, and you will need to reinsert 8 screws at home. Also, the outdoor oil finish will need to be applied at home to avoid any mess in your transportation vehicle.
  • If you live near the school Mark may be able to drop off your chair using his Ute after the class on Saturday evening.
  • If transportation is difficult, a delivery service can pick up the chair and deliver (at an additional expense).

  • 5/5 from Aidan French, attended Jan 2026: Great 2 days, teacher was great, great to have advice and tips and tricks when you run into trouble. Nice class size. Great tools, good to be using reclaimed timber. Good timing of the work and had a variety of tasks for learning. Came away with a lovely chair. Really enjoyed.
  • 5/5 from Robert Baker, attended Jan 2026: The timber, the instruction and class of 6 were all easy to work with. And most importantly the finished chair is amazing. 5 star ratings all round to Among the Trees for their re-used and beautiful timber, Tim for his guidance, patience and instruction and the workshop for it well used and well loved tools.
  • 5/5 from Hamish Russell, attended Jan 2026: Really enjoyable course. Lots of hands on experience gained including use of various power tools. Tim, our teacher was excellent with perfect balance of demonstrations and allowing us to work independently but ready to answer questions when needed. Chair is comfortable and looks good too.
  • 5/5 from Nick Linsley, attended Jan 2026: I had an excellent time working through the process of building an Adirondack chair over the weekend. Tim was an excellent instructor, with clear guidance on how to achieve each step of the process, while allowing and encouraging flexible solutions as we went. Among the Trees was also extremely well-stoked with a higher quality of tools and workspace than I can afford at home, which made the process even easier. I will definitely be going back for other courses.
  • 5/5 from Andrew & Kirsten Biddle, attended Oct 2025: The class was fantastic. It was a busy 2 days but the preparation work prior to our arrival and assistance throughout made, leaving with a finished chair a reality. Instructions were clear and frequent. Our teachers/instructors were helpful, approachable and so very very patient. Once again thankyou, Among the Trees. Andrew Biddle
  • 5/5 from David Trotter, attended Jul 2025: Carolyn and myself bought this course as birthday presents this year. Live the idea of creating stuff together. We have done some woodwork courses before but using templates to make something like this chair repeatable was a learning for me. Simple design and process Mark was a great teacher, he set us at ease and brought his learning about this chair into the session and you can see he is passionate about his woodwork (and his magic skills) The facilities were great. Everything you needed was at hand. There was a fair bit of drill bit breaking going on but there were enough spares to cope. What I liked the most was the vibe with the other class participants and how people helped each other out. Much fun. Thanks.
  • 5/5 from Nicole Henness, attended Jul 2025: I built an Adirondack chair!!! This was a great first class delving into the world of wood and some basic wood cutting and tool familiarisation work. Mark made everyone feel comfortable and encouraged everyone with his positive feedback of our work/technique helping to build our confidence as we progressed through the weekend. It was a lot of fun, and after showing some friends what I’ve built, they’re looking at what other classes are available so they can learn and build too! I love especially that we are re-using/upcycling old timber. Well done ‘AMONG THE TREES’ and thank you so much Mark for your expertise and patience with us. It was a great 2 days that I whole-heartedly recommend. Oh. And the chair doesn’t just look good, it’s really COMFORTABLE!!
  • 5/5 from Adriana Koe, attended Jul 2025: If you’re thinking about it, do it!! You won’t regret! Canadian Mark was super knowledgeable and an amazing facilitator. Lots of support and guidance in a small group environment. Wonderful to be using reclaimed timber. Highly recommended!!
  • 5/5 from Antonella Schulte, attended Jul 2025: Really great course. Mark (Instructor) is super knowledgeable and helpful and makes a complicated job very easy. Highly recommend as an experience, and you get a ridiculously comfortable chair at the end too! 10 out of 5 stars
  • 5/5 from Marg Aiken, attended Jan 2025: Made my own Adirondack Chair using recycled timber. Having never made furniture before I was happy to have been able to achieve this. Made possible by a well prepared course.
  • 5/5 from Jenine Cahill, attended May 2024: Out teacher Mark was incredibly patient and generous with his knowledge and help. Class went much longer than planned due to some battery charging issues for the tools. But the day was great and the end product fantastic. I highly recommend and will do another class.
  • 5/5 from Matteo Scalon, attended May 2024: The class and project was awesome Mark is very professional and I learned a lot One minor down points… the router table need to be corded not battery powered one … but apart from that the environment and the class is very well functional The wood used is perfect but can be very frustrating (cracks very easily) I think the use of a drill press will make the process of pre drilling much more efficient I enjoyed the class with the other students Very happy and interested in other courses

Among the Trees is an ethical and sustainability based start-up for reclaimed timber located in Marrickville.
Saving timber from demolitions or other discarded uses and making it available to the public through a retail timber shop and woodworking classes. Accessibility to wood doesn't just mean being wheelchair friendly (which we are), it also means helping customers understand how to use and source reclaimed timber. To make it as easy as possible to work with, we offer custom machining and glueing, so the timber in our store can be squared, resurfaced and cut to specific dimensions. We also help empower individuals to have the confidence to undertake woodworking projects by offering woodworking beginners classes that are taught with simple hand tools.

Lumberyards and wood workshops can be intimidating sometimes, ATT is one of the few places that caters not only to architects, planners, homeowners as well as carpenters and tradespeople but also to customers that have little to no woodworking experience and are embarking on DIY and student projects or trying their hand at repair, renovating or building.
Our workshop at Among The Trees is set up to be the perfect space to learn about hand tools, reclaimed timber, and woodworking. We’ve been hard at work collecting, restoring and tuning all the tools required to learn woodworking, and a few extra ones as well.

All-in-all, everyone that is interested in wood is welcome!
