Join us for this specialised learning experience where you will learn to pour deep cast resin to build the Millennium Falcon Lamp. You will create this wonderful statement piece to take home using Resi Art, a premium deep cast resin that allows for pour depths of up to 10cm. Resi Art was our resin of choice for this workshop because of its water-like clarity, amazing bubble dispersion, and excellent UV stability.

Over 3 sessions, this course will teach you how to frame up and prepare timber for deep cast projects of any size. No previous experience is necessary. Outlined below are how the sessions will be run:

Day 1: May the 4th (when else...) 9am - 12pm

  • Learn how to prepare timber and burl for a bubble-free pour.
  • Sealing and preparing the Millennium Falcon model
  • Sanding and preparing the timber base and applying the first coat of stain

Day 2: May 5th 9am - 12pm
  • Learn how to quickly assemble a frame from burl and acrylic at low cost using easy-to-source materials
  • Learn how to cast epoxy risers that become invisible once submerged. This will give your Millennium Falcon a true 'in-flight' appearance
  • Apply a second coat of black stain to the purpose-built base

Day 3: May 11th 9am - 12pm
  • On day three, you will be positioning your model and learning how to use UV resin to secure it into place
  • Learn how to achieve glass-like clarity with Resi Art Deep Cast Resin by mixing and pouring resin into your frame.
  • High gloss coat finishing demonstration.

Please note that finish times are approximate. Since this is a one-off workshop, we can only estimate how long people will need to complete each session.

What to expect from the Millennium Falcon Lamp build process:
  • Bark and burl edges feature wonderfully in resin, but a lot of people sand it away. Learn how to use timber with burl and difficult feature edges and still get a bubble-free pour.
  • Learn how to mount models on invisible risers to create a true 'in-flight' appearance
  • Learn how to use cost-effective and readily available materials to make moulds for deep cast resin that won't leak.

The goal will be for you to learn how to set objects in deep cast resin and create pieces with glass-like clarity and no bubbles.

We will cover high gloss 'liquid glass' coat finishing techniques that will put the finishing touch on your piece, obtaining glass-like clarity over your resin work.

Please keep in mind we are still finalising details and what the course will include, but changes will be updated here as we progress.

All materials are included.

Crazy I know, but I don't like the Millennium Falcon…Can I bring my own item/model to set in the resin? Yes, but some items may require more preparation, so we would like to advise you on how you can prepare it at least three weeks prior, so we can plan on how best to make it work in your lamp. Keep in mind the maximum size of the item would be 6cm long x 4cm wide x 2-3cm deep.

Small class size, 10 people. Two instructors.

Approximately 9 hours in total over three sessions.

Lamp size is approximately 17 x 30 x 5cm plus base (total height of approximately 35cm).

Course cost is $425 per person for all three sessions, and you also receive 10% OFF any purchases you make on the day.

Please note your piece can be picked up two weeks following the workshop as the deep cast resin requires an extended period to cure before it can be demoulded. Also, please note: Your final finishing coat is not a part of the workshop, but we teach everything needed to do all of this in simple demonstrations.
