Have you always wanted to learn how to draw? At Sydney Community College we believe that anyone can and we are here to show you how!
Absolute beginners are invited to join the casual doodler over four weeks and sharpen up their pencil skills in a comfortable and friendly environment. You'll get to work with a range of drawing materials and different subjects to create art you can be proud of!
Techniques you'll learn:
  • Line and texture.
  • Proportion and composition.
  • Tone, shape and shading.
  • Negative space and perspective.
  • Contour and volume.
By the end of this fun course, you will have learned how to observe objects for drawing and be able to use different drawing techniques, media and structures to create works of art!
Note: Please refer to the 'what to bring' section for a complete list of materials needed for this class. Your tutor may request the purchase of additional low-cost items during the course, specific to the exercises. All students must be over 18+ years of age.
What you'll get
A complete material kit is available for purchase through the course supplier, SCC. Please contact us to place your order at least five business days before the course begins.
Knowledge required
Absolute beginners welcome.
What to bring
  • Several pieces of thick willow charcoal
  • One compressed charcoal - square profile
  • Two solid (woodless) graphite pencils - 4B and 6B
  • Two drawing pencils - 2B and 4B
  • Erasers: one soft white rubber and one kneadable
  • Paper: A2 size cartridge or sketch pad
Please wear closed-toe shoes, old clothes and tie any long hair back.
Session repeats

This class series runs over 8 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.

Elinor Pickard

Elinor Pickard


Elinor Pickard is a practising artist and a painter with drawing at the centre of her practice. She has a BA Visual Arts and Grad Dip from Sydney College of the Arts. Elinor also went on to complete a Masters in Museum Studies from the University of Sydney.

Her interest in fine and decorative arts is reflected in her paintings, specifically those centred on botanical and floral subjects, rich with colour and often incorporating her fine gilding techniques. Elinor also enjoys urban sketching and capturing the interactions between people, and the human figure within the built urban environment.
An attentive and encouraging art educator, Elinor has been teaching adults since 2016. She has also run regular children's art classes since 2015.
