Make a Chair from a Tree Course

Craft Your Own Post-And-Rung Ladder-Back Chair

6 x 6 hours Class size 1 to 2     label $1,080 ($1,080 per guest when you book for 1+ guests)

Over 6 days, craft an iconic two-slat post-and-rung ladder-back chair from a log of sustainably rescued Gippsland Mountain Ash with only a small collection of simple hand tools and requiring no nails, screws, or even glue to achieve an heirloom piece of furniture. This class is an excellent introduction to the adventure of chair-making and the techniques related to traditional wet and dry mortise and tenon joinery that will remain sound for generations.

You will begin the workshop by learning how to make spindles on a shavehorse using froes, drawknives, and spokeshaves. The back slats and rear legs are shaped and steam bent around hand-made jigs using age-old methods. You will learn to weave the chair seat using natural rush fibre. After 6 days, you will take home a genuinely handcrafted heirloom piece of furniture.

Classes include all tools, materials, patterns, expert tuition and all-day tea & coffee. For your convenience classes are undertaken at your chosen location from the comfort of your home or at our workshop.
