What is Kintsugi?

Kintsugi is the century-old Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with Japanese lacquer (Urushi) dusted with powdered gold giving a new life to when otherwise items would be thrown away. In recent years this craftsmanship has been regarded as an important traditional art to influence on Modern art around the world.

Philosophy
Kintsugi express Wabi-Sabi philosophy, an embracing of imperfection, whilst appreciating artefact’s history and personal memories. Instead of disguising the damages and bringing them to the original state, Kintsugi emphasises the defects with gold, symbolises life.

History
Kintsugi art dates back to the 14th century when Tea ceremony began to spread in Japan to repair the precious tea sets. The technique has developed and changed since. It is said that archaeologist claimed there is evidence of earthenware during the Jomon period (14,000 – 300 BCE) in Japan were repaired using the lacquer.

Today was amazing. With carefully packed materials and expert instruction from a super lovely conversationalist, I had so much fun. And my little project looks gorgeous AND I have enough materials and confidence to now attempt my own project. This was fabulous. I can't recommend Yoko enough.

What a wonderful class, Yoko is a fantastic teacher, so clear and detailed in her instructions, which makes it so easy to learn. The class materials arrived in plenty of time and were all packaged beautifully with instructions to explain what each was. I'm really looking forward to dusting off my piece in 5 days and seeing the final product!

Yoko is absolutely lovely. She is very knowledgeable, warm and patient. I thoroughly enjoyed her class learning about art kintsugi technique and it's history. The kit that was sent was beautifully presented with everything you would need for the class, including all the tools and more than enough materials to continue working on further projects afterwards. I found the whole practice to be very rewarding and look forward to mending more pieces in future.
Highly recommend!

Emm Kettle  •  Jan 2021

I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Yoko is a skilled and knowledgeable teacher. She explained and demonstrated the method and checked my work via the webcam. She also explained the history and old and contemporary materials. The class was well-paced and it was very satisfying to see the work take shape. The kit contained all the tools and materials needed, and sufficient supplies for additional projects. I’m already on to my next piece. It was the first time I have taken part in a hands-on workshop that was virtually delivered and it was really good.

Yoko was a kind, informative teacher who took us through every step in good time, and clearly showed how to do them. She made sure she started and finished on time, and was particularly mindful that I had to finish a little early. While we 'did nothing' but hold our pottery pieces together for the glue to dry, she told us the history of kintsugi and talked about traditional methods. All participants came away with a successfully repaired and decorated piece, and Yoko freely answered all questions, leaving nothing out.

Meg Weller  •  Nov 2020

From the packaging of my kit, all the contents, the instructions with brief history, the email for setting up my table, to meeting Yoko on Zoom was already a fabulous experience. Yoko shares her skills with patience and kindness and it is evident her business is so much about sharing her passion and knowledge.
I am forever grateful for the few hours we spent together.

That was just about the most amazing class I've ever taken! Yoko was super friendly and organised. She sent me an email the day before letting me know what to prepare, she was very thorough and clear in her explanations, and she included a bit of extra materials with typed instructions in the kit so I can do it in my own later. In some other classes, I've felt very stressed and rushed to be finished within the timeframe, and a bit on my own when running into issues, but Yoko was really fabulous talking me through what can accidentally happen and how to fix it, and I was surprised we finished on time because I felt I took a lot longer than expected, but she made me feel it was okay to take my time to learn. I really just cannot recommend this class enough, even if you don't want to continue with the art, it's a wonderful mental break from life:) Thanks Yoko, so lovely to have met you!

She also kept me informed of the progress of the kit. During the class Yoko provided a great combination of history, information and guidance. An excellent class with a great teacher.

My daughter and I spent a thoroughly enjoyable few hours under Yoko's expert tutelage learning the art of Kintsugi. We were both so impressed by Yoko’s gentle guidance, depth of knowledge and most of all, attention to detail (right down to the green tea and lolly that came in our respective boxes!). I would never consider myself as ‘arty’ however that was OK and to be honest I found the experience convivial, relaxing, connecting, meditative and of course, informative. This was a beautiful gift as I was able to spend quality zoom time with my daughter (currently in the Melbourne lockdown) from our family home in regional NSW.

10/10 would recommend, particularly to other parents missing spending time with their young adult kids at the moment.

My first online class ever. Beautiful material was carefully packed and delivered.
During the class, I didn't need to ask much, as the teacher was explaining all the details ahead, very well organized. Through the screen, I could see the process clearly and learnt some new wording of Kintsugi technique as well. It was so much fun. I will recommend this online class for everyone and am considering of attending the actual class in the teacher's studio near future.

The experience started when I got the box! In true Japanese love for detail everything was packed neatly and it also included some amazing green tea and a personal note.

I didn't expect to get a private class so this was a bonus! Yoko is a patient teacher with great expertise. She explained everything step by step and made it very easy to follow.

Three hours went by super quickly and I'm now trying to find other things that I could fix Kintsugi style! =) Definitely recommending this course and will probably book another one in the future!
