What is Kintsugi?

Kintsugi is the century-old Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with Japanese lacquer (Urushi) dusted with powdered gold giving a new life to when otherwise items would be thrown away. In recent years this craftsmanship has been regarded as an important traditional art to influence on Modern art around the world.

Kintsugi express Wabi-Sabi philosophy, an embracing of imperfection, whilst appreciating artefact’s history and personal memories. Instead of disguising the damages and bringing them to the original state, Kintsugi emphasises the defects with gold, symbolises life.

Kintsugi art dates back to the 14th century when Tea ceremony began to spread in Japan to repair the precious tea sets. The technique has developed and changed since. It is said that archaeologist claimed there is evidence of earthenware during the Jomon period (14,000 – 300 BCE) in Japan were repaired using the lacquer.

This morning I had a class with Yoko and it was just perfect. I learned about art (Kintsugi) and made my own beautiful mended plate. The kit was very good quality and well put together. I loved the end product and the experience of making it too.
I highly recommend the class and it was a great choice of gift from a special friend. Yoko is so patient and great at explanation of each step.

From the packaging of my kit, all the contents, the instructions with brief history, the email for setting up my table, to meeting Yoko on Zoom was already a fabulous experience. Yoko shares her skills with patience and kindness and it is evident her business is so much about sharing her passion and knowledge.
I am forever grateful for the few hours we spent together.

Julisa Edwards • Oct 2020

That was just about the most amazing class I've ever taken! Yoko was super friendly and organised. She sent me an email the day before letting me know what to prepare, she was very thorough and clear in her explanations, and she included a bit of extra materials with typed instructions in the kit so I can do it in my own later. In some other classes, I've felt very stressed and rushed to be finished within the timeframe, and a bit on my own when running into issues, but Yoko was really fabulous talking me through what can accidentally happen and how to fix it, and I was surprised we finished on time because I felt I took a lot longer than expected, but she made me feel it was okay to take my time to learn. I really just cannot recommend this class enough, even if you don't want to continue with the art, it's a wonderful mental break from life:) Thanks Yoko, so lovely to have met you!

I really enjoyed my Kintsugi class with Yoko. Despite some issues with delayed delivery of the kit, Yoko followed up and sent a box by overnight delivery to make sure I had it in time for the class. She also kept me informed of the progress of the kit. During the class Yoko provided a great combination of history, information and guidance. An excellent class with a great teacher.

Lily Raynes • Aug 2020

My daughter and I spent a thoroughly enjoyable few hours under Yoko's expert tutelage learning the art of Kintsugi. We were both so impressed by Yoko’s gentle guidance, depth of knowledge and most of all, attention to detail (right down to the green tea and lolly that came in our respective boxes!). I would never consider myself as ‘arty’ however that was OK and to be honest I found the experience convivial, relaxing, connecting, meditative and of course, informative. This was a beautiful gift as I was able to spend quality zoom time with my daughter (currently in the Melbourne lockdown) from our family home in regional NSW.

10/10 would recommend, particularly to other parents missing spending time with their young adult kids at the moment.

My first online class ever. Beautiful material was carefully packed and delivered.
During the class, I didn't need to ask much, as the teacher was explaining all the details ahead, very well organized. Through the screen, I could see the process clearly and learnt some new wording of Kintsugi technique as well. It was so much fun. I will recommend this online class for everyone and am considering of attending the actual class in the teacher's studio near future.

Francine Schaepper • Aug 2020

The experience started when I got the box! In true Japanese love for detail everything was packed neatly and it also included some amazing green tea and a personal note.

I didn't expect to get a private class so this was a bonus! Yoko is a patient teacher with great expertise. She explained everything step by step and made it very easy to follow.

Three hours went by super quickly and I'm now trying to find other things that I could fix Kintsugi style! =) Definitely recommending this course and will probably book another one in the future!

On the day, Yoko is so patience and gave clear instructions to follow - Yoko do first then myself and gave tips along the way. Yoko shared a lot of her knowledge on the art of mending. I'm excited to wait for the final product and do more on joining things with gold.
