Sewing Class: Learn How to Make Shorts or Pants

Advance your existing sewing skills by following a pattern to make your own elasticated shorts or pants

5.5 hours Location Redfern Class size 1 to 8 guests   $210 (Afterpay available)

Looking to advance your current sewing skills? Come along to Sydney Creative's sewing class to make your own elasticated shorts or pants.
The pattern we use comes in different lengths, choose to make:
  • Short shorts
  • Bermuda Shorts
  • Knee Length
  • Ankle length
  • Full Length
Our pattern sizing is from size 6 - 20, if you are on either end of this scale and would like to double-check our pattern will fit, you can measure your hips with a measuring tape, stand with heels apart and measure around the fullest part of the hip and bottom area all the way around. The minimum measurement for our pattern is a hip measurement of 88cm, or the largest is 128cm.
In this intermediate class, you'll be guided through cutting your pattern and fabric, where your teacher will explain the symbols in the pattern and how to follow them to prepare your material. Previous sewing experience is essential to follow along, with a basic understanding of a sewing machine required. If you're not at this level yet, our Sewing For Beginners Class will help you get there!
The pattern for the shorts is slightly more complex and a natural next step from our Sewing For Beginners class. You'll be guided through the entire process by your experienced sewing teacher, and learn the following skills:
  • Reading a commercial pattern
  • Measuring yourself to determine the correct size
  • Cutting a commercial pattern to your size
  • Pre-treating fabric
  • Cutting your fabric to the pattern specifications
  • Attaching a waistband
  • Adding elastic to the waistband
  • Garment Construction
  • Learn our DIY overlocking method
  • Pressing seams open
  • Hemming
We'll send you home with the pattern and you'll receive an email with the pattern instructions to make another pair at home.
Participants are expected to have a basic understanding of the sewing machine for this session. Each individual will be expected to thread their own sewing machine.
There will be a 30-minute break in this session, feel free to bring lunch along with you, or there are plenty of cafes around for you to enjoy
Unfortunately our venue is not wheelchair accessible due to two steps leading into the venue

  • 5/5 from Zhanar Akhmetova, attended Dec 2025: The instructor Alex was very helpful, walked us through the steps one by one, and gave me tailored feedback (no pun intended) on my sewing technique. The class was small, only 4 people, so everyone got individual attention. By the end of it I had a pair of pants I can wear already! Highly recommend.
  • 5/5 from Maria Miglierina, attended Jan 2025: The class was fantastic! Our teacher was both knowledgeable and lovely. The structure of the class was excellent, with clear step-by-step guidance that made creating your own garment feel so much easier. Everyone can go at their own paste, which I found very good so no one feels the pressure if you’re a bit slower/less experienced. I left feeling both excited and accomplished, and I now have enough resources to give it another go at home. I’m eager to return, and my next goal is to join the dressmaking class, which looks very interesting. Thank you for such a great experience!
  • 5/5 from Lucia Alonso Sanchez, attended Jan 2025: Dani, the teacher, was very welcoming. You can tell she knows about sewing! We had a great time and walked off with new PANTS! made by ourselves! This is the first piece of clothing I have done and I only have basic sewing skills. The steps were clear, the teacher helped when needed, and we had plenty of time to finish the pants at our own pace. I recommend it!
  • 5/5 from Kyung Soon, attended Jan 2025: The class is fun and enjoyment l. Teachers are very helpful
  • 5/5 from Justine Elizabeth Gray, attended Nov 2024: Dani was an excellent teacher - patient with the many questions that came her way and full of helpful tips and guidance and made the prospect of sewing a pair of trousers in 5 hours achievable.
  • 5/5 from Tyler Fullerton, attended Sep 2024: A great class in a relaxing environment and beautiful studio. Dani was a wonderful teacher, guiding us patiently and allowing everyone to progress at their own pace. Her support gave me the confidence to construct my garment, and the added bonus of taking the pattern home was fantastic. I can’t wait to have another go.
  • 5/5 from Larissa West, attended Apr 2024: I learnt how to make shorts. My teacher was incredibly patient and helpful. We went at our own pace (I took long and required a lot of help lol) but I successfully made them!

Our story began in 2018 in a small Redfern studio. With only one desk and one sewing machine, our first class was published and we haven't looked back. Our passion for the arts coupled with bringing people together, brought our vision of launching a creative hub to life.
In our modern world, everything moves quickly, we have adapted to a fast-paced environment and sometimes it can be hard to slow ourselves down. Sydney Creative is a place for people to relax, regroup and find a creative outlet that will hopefully aid in bringing people a sense of achievement, fulfilment and joy.
Today, our classes run from our own venue in Redfern. We run lots of different creative classes from Sewing to Jewellery, painting and lots more, we love following the trends and developing new classes for our customers to enjoy.
