Need a Reset? Try These 10 Nature-Inspired Activities with Friends

Need a Reset? Try These 10 Nature-Inspired Activities with Friends

By Tiffany Fung

When life starts feeling a little too full, the answer doesn’t always have to be a weekend away or a carefully planned wellness retreat. Sometimes, you just need a few hours with good friends, something creative to focus on and a little more time surrounded by nature.

Flowers and plants classes are an easy way to do exactly that. They give you something to make with your hands, plenty of opportunities to chat and a reason to step away from your usual routine. Even better, you can take your creation home afterwards as a little reminder to keep slowing down.

From building tiny indoor gardens to arranging beautiful blooms, here are some relaxing activities to try with your friends when you’re ready for a reset.

1. Build your own little world in a terrarium

Want to ground yourself in nature? A terrarium class is a lovely option for a catch-up because you can chat while you work and admire everyone’s finished creations at the end. There are plenty of styles to explore, too, including lush rainforest-inspired designs, succulent terrariums and Japanese Zen terrariums.

It’s also the kind of activity where there’s no pressure to be perfect. Let your friends build their miniature gardens their own way, then take it home and watch them grow.

2. Arrange a bouquet that feels like you

Flowers can instantly make a room feel brighter, but arranging them yourself makes the experience even more special. Gather your friends for a hands-on flower arranging workshop and spend a few hours learning how to turn loose stems into something beautiful.

You could experiment with colour, texture and different flower shapes to create a bouquet that reflects your personality. Make a fresh flower arrangement, wildflower vase or a hand-tied bouquet!

The best part? You leave with flowers to brighten up your home, plus a new skill you can put to use the next time you’re hosting friends.

3. Slow down with the art of Ikebana

If your idea of a reset involves doing less and noticing more, try Ikebana. This traditional Japanese style of flower arranging is all about creating harmony between flowers, branches, space and form.

Rather than simply filling a vase with as many blooms as possible, you’ll think carefully about placement and composition. That makes it a wonderfully mindful activity for a group of friends who want to switch off from busy schedules and spend a relaxing morning or afternoon together.

4. Get your hands dirty with Kokedama

Ready to shake up your usual houseplant routine? Give Kokedama a go, a Japanese gardening art form of growing plants into moss-covered soil balls.

Guided by a friendly teacher, you’ll learn how to work with soil, moss and plants to create a living sculpture that can be displayed around your home.

Tip: Make it a friend-date by grabbing coffee afterwards and deciding where each of your new plant babies will live.

5. Create pressed flower art

Not all classes need to involve keeping plants alive. If you’re the friend who somehow forgets to water every houseplant, pressed flower art could be your perfect match.

Pressed flower workshops give you the chance to preserve delicate blooms and turn them into decorative artwork that can be framed or encased in glass.

It’s a slower, detail-focused activity that gives you plenty of time to chat while you arrange your design. Once finished, you’ll have a piece of botanical art to hang at home.

Want to try it for yourself? We recommend:

6. Try your hand at bonsai

Ever seen that bonsai scene in The Karate Kid? Now you can try your hand at it yourself in a bonsai class. It might not be the first activity that comes to mind for a catch-up with friends, but that’s part of the fun. You’ll slow down, learn how to shape and care for your miniature tree and enjoy a relaxed afternoon chatting and creating together.

Think of it as a reset you can take home with you. Every time you tend to your bonsai, you’ll have another excuse to slow down.

Tip: You could even start a #bonsaiwithfriends group chat to check in on how your bonsai is growing and when it's time to cut!

7. Make a mossarium together

If terrariums appeal to you but you’re looking for something a little more unusual, a mossarium could be the answer.

These miniature displays put moss centre stage, creating lush little landscapes that can bring a touch of woodland magic indoors. Perfect for friends who love things like outdoor camping/hiking or Lord of the Rings

It’s also a particularly lovely choice for a cosy afternoon catch-up. Add coffee, cake or a leisurely lunch afterwards, and you’ve got a whole day built around slowing down.

8. Learn about plants instead of just buying them

Sometimes the most satisfying nature class is one that helps you feel more confident caring for the plants you already own.

An indoor plant care workshop can teach you the basics of keeping your leafy friends happy, from understanding their needs to learning how to look after them properly. Plus, these classes are perfect for beginners, making this a fun option for groups of friends with different levels of plant knowledge.

Tip: This class is a good excuse to turn it into a plant-parent catch-up. Compare your current houseplants, swap tips and leave with a better idea of how to keep your home jungle thriving.

9. Spend an afternoon making something floral

For friends who love a creative project but want to bring a little nature into it, try a floral craft workshop.

You could make a DIY flower frame, floral hoop or even dried flower jewellery. These activities combine the beauty of botanicals with a more hands-on crafting experience, so you’re not simply arranging flowers—you’re transforming them into something you can keep.

Tip: Choose a class that suits your group and make a day of it. Wear something you don’t mind getting crafty in, put your phones on silent and enjoy making something together.

10. Turn your nature reset into a full day out

Of course, the workshop doesn’t have to be the whole experience. In fact, adding a few simple rituals around it can make your reset feel even more special.

Start with a leisurely breakfast or coffee, head to your plant or flower workshop, then follow it with a walk through a nearby park or garden. Finish with lunch somewhere cosy and give yourselves permission not to rush home.

The beauty of these activities is that they give you a reason to be present. You’re chatting with friends, learning something new and making something with your hands rather than scrolling through your phone or racing between plans.

Make space for a little more green

You don’t need to disappear into the countryside to reconnect with nature. A few hours spent creating something beautiful with friends can be enough to break up the usual routine and leave you feeling refreshed.

Whether you’re building a tiny terrarium, arranging wildflowers, shaping a bonsai or creating pressed flower art, nature-inspired workshops offer a chance to slow down while still having fun. And when you head home with your creation in hand, the reset doesn’t have to end there.

Sometimes, the best kind of catch-up is one that leaves you with a little more greenery, creativity and calm than you started with.
