What you'll do

Learn how to hem your own clothes with confidence in this focused, hands-on workshop.

Whether it’s a skirt that’s too long, a pair of pants that need shortening, or a dress sitting at an awkward length - we’ll show you how to hem them properly using a sewing machine.

This isn’t a class for total beginners. To get the most out of this session, you’ll need to have completed our three beginner level classes first, which are:

Dressmaking

Alterations may seem simple, but it's essential to have a good foundation and an understanding of how garments are put together, before you start altering them.

If you've developed your skills elsewhere, you’ll need to know how to thread and set up your machine, sew unaided, and have successfully sewn at least two garments using commercial patterns. If you’re unsure whether this is the right fit for you, feel free to get in touch before booking.

In the three-hour session, most people are able to hem one to two garments. We recommend bringing along 3–4 options, just in case some aren’t suitable for the session. You’ll leave with practical hemming skills and a renewed sense of “I can fix that” energy.

Introduction to Garment Making

Dressmaking classes first. Or if you've acquired your sewing skills elsewhere, you should have made at least two garment following commercial patterns.

What to bring

Your sewing machine (as long as you know how to use it)
A bag of different garments that require hemming, it's best to bring a minimum of 3 so the teacher can recommend the best one to start with
If you're worried about cutting into your own clothes, sometimes people bring a garment from an Op-Shop

Our story began in 2018 in a small Redfern studio. With only one desk and one sewing machine, our first class was published and we haven't looked back. Our passion for the arts coupled with bringing people together, brought our vision of launching a creative hub to life.

In our modern world, everything moves quickly, we have adapted to a fast-paced environment and sometimes it can be hard to slow ourselves down. Sydney Creative is a place for people to relax, regroup and find a creative outlet that will hopefully aid in bringing people a sense of achievement, fulfilment and joy.

Today, our classes run from our own venue in Redfern. We run lots of different creative classes from Sewing to Jewellery, painting and lots more, we love following the trends and developing new classes for our customers to enjoy.
