Thank Mum for the Small Touches This Mother's Day

By Kellie Maloney

From taking our first steps to riding a bike without training wheels, when we’re young, Mum is always there to hold our hand, guide us through life’s experiences and keep us out of harm’s way.

As we get older, we might not need her to tie our shoelaces or make us lunch, but it’s small pats on the back in our adulthood that matter. Whether it’s making a meal together or calling us when we’re sick, these moments show that Mum cares and will always be there to give us that little nudge we sometimes need.

Discover the small moments with Mum that the ClassBento crew are thankful for and spark some inspiration this Mother’s Day!

For taking the time to connect…

Editorial Manager and wheel-throwing hobbyist, Laine, was reminded of small but memorable moments she shared with her mum, Sue, last year during Sydney’s lockdown.

“We had a ritual of going for a walk in the morning because there was nothing else to do. We’d also shop for groceries together and then go back home and cook dinner,” she says.

Having the time to try new recipes, experiment in the kitchen and strike up more meaningful conversations helped Laine feel more connected to her mum. It was also one of the first times she actually enjoyed cooking!

Share more memories with Mum at a cooking class

If good food is Mum’s love language then nothing will delight her more than a cooking class this Mother’s Day. Set aside time in your week to bond over fresh pasta dishes, fold dumplings or even craft cheese from scratch and share a meal together at the end.

For always being our biggest supporter…

Tech Lead and casual pianist, Alex, thinks back on a family outing to a kid’s indoor playground. He recalls his son, Leo, being scared to slide down into the ball pit below him and grandma, Carmen, coming to the rescue.

“I couldn’t help him, but Mum was small enough to go down with him and get him to overcome his fear,” Alex says.

Witnessing this reminded him of the way his mum would always encourage him to achieve bigger things when he was a kid. It made him realise just how much he appreciates her and all that she does to support him and his family.

Show your appreciation with a flower arranging workshop

Make Mum feel extra special and add a personal touch to the classic Mother’s Day flowers by making your own bespoke arrangement together at a floristry class.

Being surrounded by fragrant, beautiful blooms will relax her while she gets to spend time with her most precious gift—you!

For always being there when times are tough…

Senior Software Engineer and aspiring filmmaker, Veeral, reflects fondly on Mum, Gita, always caring for him when he was unwell. Having not been back to see his mum in India for two years now, it’s small moments on the phone that mean the world to Veeral.

“Last week I was not well and had to go to the hospital because of an asthma episode. The next day my mum called me and as usual, she was telling me to have honey with cinnamon and giving me all her Ayurveda medicines,” he says.

Despite following all the doctor’s orders, it was Gita’s home remedy recommendations that had Veeral feeling that extra little bit cared for and loved.

Repay that comforting feeling with a hot cuppa

When we’re not feeling our best, a comforting hug from Mum can be the greatest remedy. Emulate that warm feeling at a tea class and connect as you create your own floral tea blends or a spicy chai.

If Mum loves her morning coffee, then a coffee making class might be more her style. Get behind the espresso machine together, learn how to make cafe-worthy latte art and treat Mum to an experience she can incorporate into her daily routine.

For celebrating our important milestones…

Graphic Designer and avid crafter, Veronica, spoke about a birthday she celebrated with Mum, Maria, in lockdown. To celebrate, Maria made all of her favourite foods and a huge chocolate cake for dessert.

Coming from an Italian family, cooking is “how we show love and we always put that into the food we make.”

In true Italian style, Mum always goes above and beyond to make Veronica and her sister feel special.

Make a cake with Mum at a desserts class

Every birthday is a reminder that Mum made you, so it’s no wonder she pulls out all the stops when it comes to celebrating. Thank her for the many times she’s taken over the party planning with a dessert class and surprise her with her favourite sweet treats.

Pipe buttercream flowers onto cakes, bake French pastries or make macarons from scratch before taste-testing your delicious creations together.

Mother's Day presents

For always being there...

Editorial Manager and amateur sourdough baker, Courtenay, recalls her scaled back wedding day in 2020. The ceremony was held on her parent’s balcony with just five people in attendance, including Courtenay’s Mum, Barbara.

She remembers feeling a sense of heaviness on the day, as some of her and her husband’s closest family and friends couldn’t be with them due to border closures and cancelled trips.

“As I was getting ready for our Zoom ceremony, my mum offered to do my hair in what she calls a ‘princess ponytail’ – a style that she loved to do for me when I was in primary school.”

“It was such a simple gesture, but it reminded me that even though I was getting married and starting a new chapter of my life, I would always be my parent's daughter.”

Make something special together at a pottery class

Whether it’s to witness your very first steps or to be there as you walk down the aisle, Mum is always there to cheer you on and make you feel special.

Enjoy a mindful pottery class together and learn how to sculpt ceramics that are just as unique and meaningful as your relationship with one another.

Embrace the soothing nature of wheel throwing or sink your hands into hand building clay and return home with a beautiful piece of ceramic art and an even stronger bond with your lifelong cheerleader.
