But just as there are so many different coffee types out there, there are a range of Sydney barista courses to choose from in 2026. Whether you want to learn how to use your new coffee machine, build your skills as a barista or simply learn how to appreciate the different flavour profiles of different coffee types, there is something for everyone to enjoy. With our beginner-friendly guide, you can find out what you can expect at these Sydney barista classes and choose which course is right for you!

Make espresso-based drinks

These barista classes in Sydney will cover the essentials of making espresso-based drinks which usually involves learning how to use a coffee machine. Depending on the length of the class, you could learn the basics or go a little more in-depth. In most cases, you’ll learn how to prepare the espresso, use a professional coffee machine and learn some basic milk-frothing techniques. If the course goes deeper, you may learn the history and background of how coffee is sourced. These classes may also include instructions on how to set up, clean and maintain a machine.

Some courses even claim to be able to teach experienced baristas a thing or two. The cost ranges anywhere from $100 - $200 depending on the duration of the lesson and the teacher offering the class. Small coffee shops may charge at the lower end of the price range, whilst more established shops and schools will cost more. This Barista workshop in Marrickville will teach you the basics of making a good espresso based coffee as well as a thing or two about being a barista and running a cafe.

Create beautiful latte art

Whilst most barista classes do teach participants how to froth milk, latte art classes will teach coffee enthusiasts how to produce the perfect latte art, after all, those hearts and flowers you see on your morning coffee don’t make themselves. Here, you'll learn how to get the milk to the correct consistency and the pouring method used to achieve pretty patterns. Sometimes, these classes also take a deeper dive into the topics that you covered during your first barista class like how to work a coffee machine. Costing around the same as the first class, you should expect to pay around $120 on average.

Learn milk steaming and pouring

Beyond the standard latte art course, you can also learn about the nuances of milk preparation and how to create different drinks. Many people think that a latte, flat white and cappuccino are the same thing but barista courses in Sydney will teach you the difference between all espresso-based drinks, as well as how to make the perfect coffee each time. You'll be sure to come away with the best frothing techniques. These barista courses will also teach you which is the best milk to choose for different coffee drinks.

Barista classes are great experience gifts

If you’re not planning to take your skills to the expert level just yet, get a taste of barista life at a barista experience class. Or perhaps you know someone who’s thinking about getting into the industry? Get them one of these barista classes for fun experience gifts. Especially if you can find a private class for two, you can go together and learn a new skill too. Some dedicated coffee schools will also cater to large groups and events. It doesn’t always have to be serious, you can learn how to make great coffee simply for fun.

Barista classes are also perfect for team building activities, it gives colleagues a chance to bond while learning handy new skills they can put to use in the office. Catch up in the morning over some coffee making and at the end, enjoy a delicious, flavourful cup of joe!

Experience classes usually cost less than a professional barista course, at around $90 - $100. They offer a way to dip your toes into the world of coffee, without committing too much money.

Short course or intensive training?

The above courses last around two to four hours, but there are intensive training courses that can multi-day or week-long. Longer barista courses aim to bring you up to industry-expert standards. Whilst a class can’t replace years of experience, it can take your passion to the next level. Some barista training courses even include how to brew coffee, hot chocolate and tea.

An intensive course does seem to cost more than a short course, but it could work out cheaper in the long run. Especially if you're planning to attend several short courses, intensive programs justify the higher cost with comprehensive subjects and longer contact hours. Hands-on courses can cost anywhere upwards of $900 and cap at around $2,000. The actual price depends on the duration.

Coffee appreciation and tasting

Some coffee classes in Sydney aren't about frothing milk or using espresso machines at all. Rather they're about learning how to truly taste and appreciate coffee, recognising different flavour profiles and brewing methods and indulging your senses. Whether you already feel confident making an espresso or want to learn about coffee before learning how to use a coffee machine, these classes are a wonderful addition to your foray into the world of coffee plus there's a lot more tasting and a lot less work involved!
