a pre-recorded video with instructions. You're welcome to ask the teacher any questions you have.
What you'll do
Using our compact, custom-made weaving loom (included) and easy step-by-step online video tutorial we teach you this fast and fun method of making sleeping mats from plastic bags that would otherwise go to landfill. Collect plastics from family and friends, or we can send you as many bags as you like from our large recycled stock. Once you've woven the mat/s, simply send/bring them to Nest and we distribute them via our Homeless Service Partners (Mission, Wesley, Salvation Army etc) and via our weekly community outreach van.
Class is 90mins long, broken into easy-to-digest modules so you can work at your own pace.
Class fee goes 100% to charity, and covers:
- our custom weaving loom, including postage

- 30 recycled plastic bags to start you off
Knowledge required
Super Beginner Friendly! No skill/experience needed at all! You don't need to know how to weave. If you can use scissors, you can do it! We teach you a super simple method (we teach kids from 8yrs old and they love it!) step by step. It's easy, fun and quite addictive!

What you'll need
All you need is scissors, the loom you will receive from us and plastic bags. It takes approx 300-500 plastic bags to make one sleeping mat. Collect plastics from family and friends, or if you dont have enough - we got you! We can send you as many bags as you like from our large recycled stock.

Nest is an Australian charity that weaves waterproof sleeping mats for people experiencing homelessness using recycled plastic bags. These fun Class Bento classes are here to teach this easy method, to give people the opportunity to join with us in weaving these mats.
We pull together communities to:
- Collect recycled soft plastic bags and bottles from collection locations across Australia
- Weave the sleeping mats from the recycled materials
- Teach the simple technique of mat-weaving to students
- Distribute the mats free to homeless centres across Australia
By provide an insulating, comfortable and hygienic barrier between the ground and the person sleeping rough, these mats make it easier to stay warm, clean and dry.
