Make a Ceramic Serving Platter: Hand-Building Pottery Class

Our platter-making class is a great way to start working with clay and create something you’ll love to use. You’ll learn core skills like slab, pinch, and coil building while creating a platter and dipping bowls you can proudly show off at your next soirée ("Oh this? Nothing really. It’s just something I knocked up a while ago…"). Not only will you be showered with compliments, but you will experience the satisfaction of hand-building, which is like meditation but more productive!Together, we will explore a range of different platter forms and textural decorative techniques to add colour and personality to your design. This class is all about the slab building technique: rolling, cutting, joining, and attaching three-dimensional decorative elements to create your one-of-a-kind platter. You will also be shown how to create different textural effects using a range of sculpting and trimming tools. Once you have created your canvas, we will explore how to make the most of it with different decorative effects made using a range of sculpting and trimming tools and underglaze colours.Your tutor is an experienced educator who keeps her classes small (a maximum of 8 per class) so everyone gets the time and attention they deserve.Has all this platter-making put you in the mood to party? This is a beginner-friendly class accessible to people with no previous experience, and those who’ve dabbled before. Pick up some new skills and create something you’ll be proud of!You must be at least 13 years old to attend this class (minors will need an accompanying adult). Included in the price, we will clear glaze then fire your piece after class, ready for pick up from the studio in 3-4 weeks. Your objects will be dishwasher and microwave-safe too!

• A big ball of clay - more than enough to make a platter and accompanying small dishes.
• Work with a full suite of clay tools and underglazes - everything you need to make and decorate your platter.
• You’ll wear one of our gorgeous rust-coloured cotton drill aprons with soft linen straps…sooooft!
• It’ll be afternoon tea time so tea and coffee are provided (inc. regular and soy milk).

Best of all, you will get addicted to a new ritual, the calming quality of clay! We could say ‘wear something that’s easy to clean, or that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty. Covered shoes are ideal and think about keeping long hair out of the way’ but honestly all you need to bring is your radiant self!
