Come and spend a Saturday wooden spoon carving and walk away not only with the experience but also a full set of spoon carving tools and a beautiful wooden spoon made with your own hands!

Creating something as fundamentally human as a wooden spoon using simple hand tools is such a satisfying experience.

This guided workshop in Sydney will take you through the process of selecting materials and the relaxing process of making your own wooden spoon. After a safety briefing, you will receive the tools and materials. Then we will spend a few hours slowly carving a spoon and break for lunch before completing the spoon in the afternoon.

What's included in the workshop:

  • A set of spoon carving tools (to take home after the class is completed)
  • All materials required (spoon blank in wood, sandpaper, food-safe organic wood finish)
  • Use of other hand tools, based on your design (a small axe, saw, chopping block, vice, clamps)
  • Cut-resistant gloves for limited protection against the tools
  • All instructions and support required on the day
  • Lunch from a local cafe (poke bowl, salad, burger + drink)

How the workshop will run:
The day starts with a safety briefing and then we discuss the process from sourcing sustainable materials to the steps involved in making spoons. From axe work to bowl carving and the whittling of the bowl outline before we finish with hand sanding your spoon and applying your choice of either hemp seed oil or our own CoCoBee mix to your spoon. Both finishes are organic and food safe. You will leave not only with your spoon but with the tools and skills required to continue your journey as a spoonsmith!

The workshop will be held in the back yard of our location in Brookvale, Northern Beaches Sydney. This is an industrial setting outside, under a roof with basic facilities. Lunch break will be from noon to 1 pm and there are several cafes in the area, as well as two craft breweries within a five-minute walk (Nomad Brewery and 4 Pines Brewery) but there will no alcohol permitted until after any sharp tools are put away.

Note: Please make sure to select correctly either right-handed or left-handed tools, to make sure we have enough of the correct hook blades for your workshop.

Knowledge required
Anyone over 16 years old with an interest in making their own spoon, no prior experience is required.

We will be doing some basic axe work, for those selecting to use greenwood. Those selecting to not complete the axe steps or preferring softer material will carve pine which can be worked without the use of an axe.

Anyone able to follow basic safety instructions required to work with sharp tools. Such as only carving while sitting down, carving away from your body and be mindful of the safety guidelines as provided by your instructor who is with you every step of the way.
What you'll get
  • Hands-on experience in a small group setting.
  • Spoon carving tools to bring home, allowing you to continue carving from now on with your new tools and skills.
  • You will create your own serving spoon on the day to bring home.
What to bring
  • A smile and a bottle of water.
  • We recommend wearing full-length pants and closed-toe shoes on the day. We will provide fabric "cut resistant" gloves on the day, these offer limited protection against slicing wounds but great care is always required when working with sharp tools.

Enjoyed the spoon carving course over the weekend. Mick was our instructor, friendly, knowledgeable and passionate guy. Was great learning such a portable form of woodworking. Being given the tools to continue this is a definite incentive. Will definitely be getting more into this in the future. Loved the course, love my spoon. Thanks guys.

I took my dad as a 60th birthday gift and we had great fun! Graeme was an excellent teacher and you could tell how much he cares about woodworking. My dad even bought more timber blanks and a hatchet so he can make more spoons, so it was clearly a winner in his books.

It was an excellent workshop, perfect with only 4 participants, each of the final products looked really good, all different as well.
This is a great introduction to woodwork and we all had a great time.
Mitch was a perfect teacher, checking on all of us and helping when help was needed.
Overall learned skills with the axe, the 2 knives as well as how to keep them sharp.
It was good not to have think about lunch as it is all provided.
A beer at the end of the workshop when the spoons were drying in the Sydney autumn’s sun was the perfect way to end the day.
Applying the wax at the very end to reveal the finished products is really special.
I am intending to make a few more at home for family and friends, using the tools provided in the kit.
It was a really enjoyable experience, great feeling of making something which I will use daily, highly recommended.

The teacher was awesome and I had an awesome time I got a bit carried away in carving as it was so fun definitely a thing other teenagers should do. The tools where awesome and they taught us how to use them safely which was good and provided us with cut proof gloves. The lunch was awesome as well. 10 out of 10 for this course.

Bjorn was a great teacher, very knowledgeable and informative. Walked away with a lovely wooden spoon and a small carving tool kit. Nice lunch too. Very satisfied.

Shane Rossetto • Jun 2021

The course was well organised from the start, all information provided to ensure we were prepared.
Mark was a great instructor providing good advice at just the right time. Also lending a helping hand anytime a student was having difficulties or doubt.
Facilities were more than adequate on a cold wet windy miserable day. We were outside but under cover and sheltered.
Every thing was provided, tools, spoon blanks, sandpaper, finishing oil, water, coffee and a great lunch.
A couple of people had problems with their curved knife, but this was very quickly rectified by Bjorn.
Highly enjoyable day learning new skills and meeting new people.

Fantastic workshop! We learned so much (including niece Tash and good friend Jules). Terrific teacher in Rowland; makes it look achievable and very clear guidance which assists with the challenging parts of spoon making! Do yourself a favour, do this fun, hands on, well organised workshop. Stressed? Do this workshop because all you concentrate on is the task at hand. Seriously! A really great day. Thanks to Bjorn for great communication pre Workshop too. Thanks again fella's

Our teacher Rowland was fabulous, I just loved making my wooden spoon. I am hooked and I want to do more. I would highly recommend taking this course as you home with skills you never had and tools to practice with! The day went so quickly. Great fun for a group of friends or single individuals.
Thank you so much! I had a great time

Great fun. Teacher was helpful. Fabulous to be able to continue and make more spoons at home. Great to have the tool kit to do that, except the axe. Only thing is that it cost me more because I couldn’t find a willing friend to come with me, that’s sad. I’m glad I went anyway but should have cost the same. Maybe discount friends if they are going to share a toolkit? Just a suggestion. Loved it! Inspired.
