Learn how to weave a beautiful woollen beret, choosing your own colours and patterns.
Guided by your friendly teacher, you will start and finish a one-of-a-kind woven beret. Simply bring along scraps of yarn (or use ours!) and make a cosy accessory for your wardrobe.
This class will take place across two sessions of two hours each on Sunday afternoons. You will be able to join the friendly woven beret Facebook support group afterwards to continue your craft!
Weaving takes time which is why we will have a week between sessions. Please note, you will need to make time during the week to complete the weaving, ready for session two.
Booking Policies: Due to our small class numbers, our workshops are non-refundable and non-transferable. Be sure to familiarise yourself with all our refund and cancellation policies before booking to avoid disappointment.

What you'll get

What to bring
  • You need a piece of cardboard or foam board. The lid of a family-sized pizza box works well.
  • A large-eyed needle.
  • An awl
  • About 100 grams of yarn starting with 4ply for the warp. After that, you can mix and match some thicker yarns (and colours) if you wish.
  • For finishing (session two), you will need a 45cm circular knitting needle.
We will have all of these for you to borrow as well but if you can bring your own that's great too.

The School of Sewing & Upcycling began in 2015. We set up in a small shop in Buckley Street, Footscray and began to share our love of sewing with you. In 2019, we shifted to our current home right on the border of Footscray and Yarraville – a big, bright and welcoming space where many people come to hone their sewing skills.
In February 2023, Zoe took over the business from Gaye (who still teaches) and in May 2023 moved into new space in Whitehall Street, Footscray.
At SOSU, we believe that sewing is a wonderful life skill and we want to share it with you. Learning how to alter and mend the things that you have as well as learning the skills to create your own gorgeous garments will help you to be more creative and sustainable. We offer a wide range of full and half-day workshops or ongoing courses that will build, refresh or consolidate your sewing skills. We have a great mix of beginner and skilled sewers of all ages learning at our school. We can also arrange private lessons for those that learn better one-on-one. It’s just you and your teacher so that you can really get into that special project.
