At ensō body, we believe that the physical body can take whatever form we choose as an expression of our true and innermost self. A place where we can creatively embody shapes 'your' way and cultivate our whole sense of being, both on and off the mat.

This is why we've brought an exciting collaboration with Japanese artist and calligrapher, Suiki Hamamoto for a yoga and Japanese ink painting (Sumi-e) workshop. At this event, you'll be guided through a creative outlet of movement (yin yang yoga) and play (Japanese ink painting, commonly referred to as Sumi-e).

Yin yang yoga is a combination of passive and dynamic postures to help you find balance, flexibility and strength. Embody movement and stillness through softness and flow.

Japanese black ink painting, referred to as Sumi-e (Sumi 墨 = black ink, e 絵 = painting) is a painting style that focuses on different brush strokes and ink densities. You'll commonly see this style illustrated as bamboo leaves, cherry blossoms, koi fish and many other lifeforms.

The nature of Sumi-e isn't to reproduce the appearance of a subject but the practice and intention behind it. It's a meditative practice that embraces the present moment. Deeply rooted in Zen Buddhism, monks dedicated many years of this practice through strict discipline and deep reflection.

How the class will run:

  • 1 pm - Antonika will teach you through a delicious 60-minute yoga sequence of both yin and yang as you 'move' your body through soft flow and stillness. Great for beginners.
  • 2.00 pm - eat, chat and relax as we set up for Sumi-e. Enjoy a range of vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free snacks to replenish your body before the next part of our workshop.
  • 2.30 pm - Suiki will guide you through an introduction into Sumi-e as you gain an understanding of the art form and the materials needed (known as the 'Four treasures'). You'll also learn about the rich history and have fun as you 'play' and experiment with different brush stroke techniques to create your own Sumi-e artwork. No Sumi-e experience is required.
  • 4 pm - we conclude the workshop, feeling calm, relaxed and inspired.

You'll get to take home all your artistic creations so you can continue to ignite your creative fire after a fun experience of yin yang play.

My name is Antonika.

I'm a yoga teacher and founder of ensō body.

In Japanese calligraphy, ensō is an uninterrupted brushstroke of a circular form. It represents a state where ‘the mind can be free to let the body create’. To me, yoga has an emphasis on ensō where the physical body can take whatever form we choose as an expression of our true and innermost self.

ensō body was created with the intention to help others move, rest and reconnect to themselves. I love encouraging others to seek out their most embodied self. ensō body is here to support you on your journey and to embrace these unique experiences through movement and rest.
