Light up your Japanese name for all to see with this relaxing, hands-on pottery workshop with Alvin Alejo in Brisbane!
Guided by Alvin, you'll learn how to sculpt an elegant piece of pottery that can be used in the garden, entrances, pathways and decks where the sun touches it. You'll make the lantern out of clay before it is glazed and fired in the kiln.
The writing is in Japanese characters using the maker's name or an uplifting word such as happiness, love, peace, harmony etc. The total height of your ceramic piece is about 30 cm.
Its small solar panel generates power during sunny hours and radiates light through the name carved in it at night. The duration of its light depends on the power generated by the sun on its panel.
Enjoy the relaxing and mindful practice of hand building pottery and take home a welcome and beautiful lantern for your home!

I like so much to work with my hands since my younger years which made me become skilful in many crafts. I am also knowledgeable in many other crafts which I have done in the past and is still doing them as needed, such as: furniture making, boat building, paddle making, furniture restorations, polishing, wood turning, metal crafts and Tai Chi.
I have a shed/studio where I do my personal works.
I am an active member of North Pine Pottery club, North Pine Trade and Foundry club and North Brisbane Lapidary club. I learn and share my other skills through these clubs.
I had been in Furniture Making business and is on Jewellery Making at the moment.

2 ClassBento workshops attended
Today my husband and I did our very first pottery class together for an early valentines date!
We knew we had found the right place as the studio was marked with pottery class on a cute sign placed out the front and Alvin greeted us with a big smile and we got started straight away. Everything was very clean, pre organised ready to go. Alvin guided us with the right tools and methods to help us make our very own Japanese lanterns. It was a great hands on experience the whole time, 3 process easy to follow steps! We are excited to pick up our glazed and set lanterns ready to put in our own garden. Thank you Alvin, it was a great experience and I will definitely recommend 5 stars

Alvin was very kind and encouraging. He showed us how to do the task, and then gave us an opportunity to do it ourselves so that we learned the skill. The workshop is well set up and we were provided with all the materials needed to make our lantern. My teenage son really enjoyed the small group. It was value for money and I highly recommend this workshop!

Our teacher Alvin made you feel very welcome & explained each step of the process & showed by example which made it easy to follow in creating all 3 parts of the lantern. Quality clay, materials & tools provided. A relaxed class were your not pressured for time & the small class ensures you get the guidance you need to produce a piece you are proud off. On top of that it’s great fun.

Alvin’s Japenese Lantern class is truly excellent Alvin is an amazing person, and amazing teacher, he is kind, calm and very highly skilled. He is very patient and helps you fix up your work as you go, so even a complete novice can do this. Alvin has a great workshop, gives you everything you need, and the lanterns come out absolutely beautiful I would highly recommend going to Alvin’s course 10 / 10 Big thanks Alvin, we loved it Geraldine & Wayne
