Meet Sydney Creative

Meet Sydney Creative

By Kellie Maloney

Sydney Creative is a pop of bright pink on Redfern’s buzzing Regent Street. It is the dream studio of textile artist and founder Sophie Parry, who started the community space as a way to connect like-minded creatives.

What started as one sewing machine and a desk in a small, rented space is now a thriving craft studio offering regular classes and workshops in everything from quirky jewellery making to sewing for beginners.

Ready to start making? Roll colourful polymer clay into earrings, learn how to sew a cushion cover or pour eco-resin into trinket dishes with Sophie and her supportive team!

I’m on a mission to…

“Empower people and give them a sense of fulfilment and joy when they've made something amazing.”

Mindful crafting can help you slow down…

“We all tend to be, go, go, go and crafting is something to think of other than your job or whatever you do during the day. It takes your mind elsewhere and I think it's really important to have that escape.”

Mistakes are just happy accidents…

“Try to keep going with it because it can't get any worse, it can only get better. And if you still don't like it in the end, it doesn't matter. You've already messed it up once—you can just throw it away or it can end up being great.”

I love building community in my classes…

“I see myself as the glue that holds the group together. I'll ask some questions, I'll make some jokes and then that kind of breaks the ice and people get chatting. Sometimes students who started out as strangers head off to get gelato down the road or they go to the pub on the corner together to keep the night going. It’s really nice to see.”

The biggest transformations I see…

“Are in my sewing classes. People walk in with zero sewing experience and they're scared of the machine so I ease them into it and when they leave they’re really, really happy. I've had so many comments from my store neighbours that people walk out with a cushion and massive smiles on their faces.”

Don’t think you’re creative? Think again…

“I would say that everyone has a creative bone in their body. They just need to find their own creative outlet, whether that be cooking, painting or making earrings. If you’re a first-timer don't overthink it and just go with it.”
