Ever wanted to know how to join two pieces of metal together? Create a cool sculpture or piece of furniture? Or just wanted to wear the cool mask? Welding for Beginners is for you.

Beginners learn gas-less mig welding of mild steel, on inverter machines. The class will learn all the basic welding techniques required to work on small construction and art projects. Also, the many traps in buying your own machine will be discussed.

NOTE: Please check whether you are in the morning or afternoon session.

Morning session: 10.00am-1pm

Afternoon session: 2-5.00pm

*If you use reading glasses, please bring them!  The welding mask makes seeing difficult without them

*Pregnant women should not be attempting electric welding

Please note: This class requires at least five students to run. In the unlikely event that we don't get this number of students, we'll cancel the class and fully refund you and inform you via email, so please watch your email a few days prior to the class

Aside from this class, Work-Shop also has the following coming up:

What you'll get

  • Welders and consumables

  • Steel off cuts to practice on

  • Welding helmets and gloves are provided

What to bring

  • Students must wear solid, rubber-soled, leather work boots, preferably steel-toed (please no sport shoes!)

  • Please wear 100 per cent cotton collared long sleeve shirts and 100 per cent cotton long trousers as sparks can cause synthetic clothes to burn

Suitable for

This class is a great indoor activity idea for individuals and couples as well as for a birthday, hens party, team building activity, corporate event, bucks party or Christmas party.

A handyman by trade, Phil has been welding for over 40 years, mainly cars, but also household projects like gates, fences, posts and beams. Over the years, he has taught basic welding leisure classes to novices, but the escalating prices for machines, gas, and even steel has almost stopped hobby welding courses.

New inverter technology has made the machines lighter, smaller, cheaper, and provides a more stable arc, making them easier to use. So home welding is affordable again, and Phil is leading the charge.

Phil was a great teacher and he had the additional responsibility of making sure we were protected from the Coronavirus risks with additional gloves and masks.
The steps taken were clearly explained and we left with a good basic knowledge of how to weld.
I would recommend this course.

I took the class to help me decide if welding was something I would like to know. Phil as an instructor has enormous amounts of knowledge and enthusiasm for teaching his class. All materials were supplied as well as welding masks and gloves. The instruction was exactly what I was looking for to help me decide if I wanted to invest in a machine. I did buy a machine and have since effectively made enough repairs to cover my outlay.
If I'd just purchased a machine without this class there is no way I'd be able to repair what I have. This class was excellent value. Thank you Phil and the team!

The welding workshop was awesome.

It was great just to have a turn to join to bits of metal together. Without sitting through 12 months of metallurgy theory and electrical classes.

Will be buying my own welding kits shortly so I can practice.

It was a great introduction.

I really enjoyed the class. The only thing that could be improved is maybe a bit more time. The end was a bit rushed and so the teacher didnt get a chance to get around to everyone. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wanted to learn welding!

Very knowledgeable but at time lost his train of thoughts making the point he wanted to make come across confusing. Passionate and experienced.
He would be brilliant rather than good if he can get more structured and to the point in his explanations.
Enjoyed it and feel confident in starting welding.
When location changes, send out an email with the change! Arrived late because of it and that is no good for anybody.

The course was great and Phil was very knowledgeable. Maybe in the future everyone could have their own welder to practice on.

Phil is very knowledgeable about welding. I have reasonable theoretical knowledge and it was great to finally have a chance to try electric arc (stick) and gasless MIG welding. Fantastic!

Teacher was very knowledgeable. However the class was at a different location than listed in the confirmation email and no contact was made to let anyone know the location had changed, apart from a note taped on the roller door of original location. The new location wasn't set-up for this type of class, all students sharing one folding table that moved everytime someone used the metal brush or steel wool. We were all so close together that it made it hard to get anything done.

My husband and I did the welding class for something different to learn and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Phil was knowledgeable, interesting and practical and gave individual attention. Great teaching manner. Inspiring.
