Description

Join me in my cozy studio, and let me guide you through the foundational skills in pottery, of centering clay on the wheel and making a bowl.

You'll spend the first few minutes saying 'hello' to the clay by creating a 'pinched' bowl, where you'll literally shape the clay with your hands into a bowl, and feel its texture and malleability. This is a faster and more intuitive technique, where you'll have more control to make a very unique looking bowl, one that looks like it's been sculpted by hand (because it has been!)

Then you'll see a step by step demonstration on the wheel. From there, you'll be guided through the stages of making a small wheel-thrown bowl. Wheel throwing makes it easier to create more polished, refined and symmetrical bowls. It takes a little bit more skill, but that's what this class is for!

If you'd like to stretch this class out so that you have more time (which you can decide on the day after experiencing it), that's possible too.

You'll leave your bowls with me to be fired (usually takes 1-2weeks), which you can then pick up and enjoy; I can send the bowls to you as well if need be.

You'll notice that the total price is the same regardless of whether one or two students attend, so feel free to bring a friend!

As an alternate plan, you can also bring your own idea to class and I can guide you through the proccess of making it in clay, either on the wheel or by handbuilding.

The price includes materials and firing one bowl per person with a clear glaze.

I've been teaching ceramics for 10 years. I learned this art at UNSW and Bezalel.

I'm passionate about pottery because it's a great way to indulge in both creativity and wellbeing. I find that clay throwing puts you in a tranquil and mesmerising place, which creates a sense of peace, and a connection with nature and the Earth. Like the martial art of Jujutsu where you harness and use your opponent's force and energy, you balance, manage, and build on the spinning force from the pottery wheel, using your own, to make something beautiful. Handbuilding is great fun too, as clay is malleable, tactile and easy to mold into any form.

My friend and I had such a wonderfully inspired night in Leanne’s private workshop. Her teaching was patient, fun and informative. We had never done pottery before and left with some amazing creations and skills. We highly recommend this experience!!!
