Discover the fascinating world of oil paints in this comprehensive oil painting course! Over seven sessions, you will learn the techniques and benefits of working with the oil paint medium.
Suitable for both beginners and those with some painting experience, you will be guided through structured exercises to create paintings with beautiful texture and finish – even without any prior painting experience.
We will begin with the examination of inspirational paintings from the Renaissance and Baroque. You will be introduced to the historical techniques as used by artists during this period. Your first painting will be the reproduction of a section of a painting of your choice from this period.
The traditional techniques acquired during this study will then be used to create a second painting of your choice.
What you will learn about over seven sessions:
- Tonal painting and underpainting
- Colour theory and colour mixing
- Paint formulation and handling
- Brush technique
- The application of grounds and priming's and the construction of an oil painting
At the end of this painting course in Sydney, you will be able to confidently mix colours using colour theory, create various formulations of oil paint, create a single-layered and multi-layered painting and know some awesome brush and palette techniques.

Brushes
- A range of round hog bristle brushes - at least 10, for example, sizes & quantity: 2×4, 2×6, 2×8, 2×10, 2×12 (choose any inexpensive brand)
- Two small round synthetic sable brush: sizes: 2, 4
Other:
- A disposable paper palette pad (A4)
- A 2B or 4B pencil
- A small cartridge paper sketch pad
- A small stretched canvas - suggested sizes: 10×12″ or 12×16″ or 16×20″ (can be purchased from a discount variety store)
- A pad of Canson Canvas Paper 290 gsm A3 in size (or equivalent)
- A small bottle of either cold-pressed linseed oil or stand oil
- Rubber, Nitrile or Vinyl disposable gloves (from the supermarket)
- Spade-shaped Stainless Steel palette knife
- Cotton rags (e.g. old t-shirts)
- Two or three glass jars with lids
- 250ml odourless solvent
- Smock or another protective garment (an old shirt or t-shirt will do)
This class series runs over 7 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.
