Join artist Nicole Barakat at Reverse Garbage in Marrickville for a fun and engaging workshop playing with plants to colour cloth!

In this beginner-friendly workshop, Nicole will generously share her skills and knowledge from her 20 years of experience working with plant materials to dye cloth in ethical and sensitive ways.

Learn a number of eco-dyeing techniques including, immersive dyeing, resist dyeing and eco-printing. Use readily available plant materials with affordable and accessible techniques that can be replicated at home.

Gather your friends and join us for an enjoyable and creative evening! You will take home your dyed clothing item home with you and the knowledge to continue this practical craft at home.

Please aim to arrive at 5:20pm for a 5:30pm start. The workshop will conclude at 9:00pm.

What to bring
Participants should bring a light-coloured (white/beige) 100 per cent silk or wool clothing item or piece of fabric (or two). Please don't buy new, consider something reused or secondhand.

Nicole Barakat is an artist and educator who works with deep listening and intuitive processes, with the intention to transform the conditions of everyday life. Nicole has worked as an educator in the arts for over 20 years, including lecturing in Fine Arts (textiles) at UNSW Art & Design (2003 – 2011) and working as an artist-educator at the Art Gallery of NSW (2016 – 2018) and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (2013 – present).

Nicole learnt to dye cloth with plants 25 years ago on the banks of the Murrumbidgee on Wiradjuri Country, under the guidance of Julie Montgarrett and Ruth Hadlow. Nicole has developed her dyeing practice in ethical and sensitive ways, in line with her cultural practices that are rooted in remembering and re-gathering her ancestral knowledge. In 2021, Nicole created a large-scale, collaborative eco-dyed artwork with the Rohingya Women’s Development Organisation for the Powerhouse Museum’s exhibition Eucalyptusdom.
