6 to 12 years     6.5 hours Class size 15 to 20     label $111

Learn what it means to ‘paint with light’ in this fun and relaxing sculpture, lighting and digital imaging class in Sydney for kids! This class is suitable for kids from six to 12 years of age, with no experience necessary.

By using different materials, shapes and a range of lighting effects, together with overlapping, transparency and reflection, we will create and develop structures and objects that will be photographed by individuals on an iPhone or iPad. Everyone will create their own three-dimensional structures and then using torches and other light sources, we will create interesting shapes, shadows and reflections.

During the full-day class, kids will explore the co-incidentally formed light and shadows from reflections, as well as how we all have a different perspective and perception of things around us. The class will illustrate our extraordinary way of seeing and communicating things.

Artist and educator, Heidi Melamed, will run the 'the joy of seeing' class and having used form, colour and light as mechanisms in her own practice, aims to bring some interesting ideas to the class that may contribute to students seeing and experiencing the world around them differently.

At the end of this colour light reflection class, kids will take home a digital image of one of their favourite images that they have photographed as well as their three-dimensional structure.

Please note: we are a nut-free environment.

Heidi Melamed

Heidi Melamed is an artist and educator who has always drawn and painted. Throughout her creative life, she has surrounded herself with images and objects that she loves to bring her joy. She is passionate about art and her mission is to share this joy with others in as many ways as she can.

As an artist, if Heidi can inspire people to find joy in art, which inevitably enriches one’s life, then that is a footprint that she will proudly leave.

For many years, Heidi used traditional mediums for drawing and painting and now works across disciplines using mixed media and paint with light in space. Just as everyone can find inspiration from the world, Heidi gets inspired by things she sees from walking the dogs to travelling to reading books and magazines - her eyes are always open to absorb what she sees.

Graduating with two Master degrees in five years has given Heidi the opportunity to be part of two very different and dynamic institutions; the UNSW Art and Design and The National Art School. Having been immersed in these centres of learning has changed the way that she sees and responds to the world around her. Giving herself this opportunity to learn has been a ‘standout’ moment in her life but by far, the most ‘stand out’ moments have been being able to share this experience with her own children.
