Sydney Cooking School opened in 2010 when Executive Chef Brett Deverall pursued his dream to share his love andpassion of cooking in a fun and relaxed learning environment. Offering a range of cooking classes daily, our Neutral Bay venue is fitted with state of the art appliances and equipment from Fisher & Paykel, Breville and Anolon.

Our experienced and passionate team take pride in teaching practical, entertaining and informative cooking classes or hosting your next event.

We have a variety of themed menus and packages available, and our formats are suitable to anyone, from the absolute beginner to the more passionate cook. As well as our regularly scheduled classes, we offer masterclasses in Pastry, Chicken & Duck and Pork & Cider, as well as Children’s School Holiday classes.

If you prefer to be out of the Kitchen join us in our fabulous BBQ area for one of our Popular BBQ classes – Things really heat up in these classes so ensure you dress comfortably.

Ken is a fantastic teacher, very engaging, knowledgeable and fun all at the same time. Credentials-wise, he has the experience and knowledge to back what he does, but delivered in a format which worked fantastically, and was both understandable (simple enough) and useful (non-complex recipes) meaning we could also apply what we've learned beyond the class.

My daughter and I decided it would be nice to do something 'different' together. We both like cooking and we didn't know much about pasta.
Our teacher was great; the right balance between being personable, interesting and time efficient.
Everything was so well provided; we didn't know what to expect but to provide an overview, you arrive, there was about 17 of us. We were told a bit about what we're going to cook, we were given a demonstration and then each person is provided with ingredients and materials and away you go. Of course, you forget the instructions, but the team is there to help and get you out of trouble.
The end result was delicious. We learned how to make pasta and tonight we're going to use the pasta we brought home and make a meal out of it.
I liked the balance between gaining knowledge and putting the instruction into action. The atmosphere was relaxed and sociable and that was due to the hosts.
I really would recommend this if anyone wants to learn a bit more about cooking dishes they are not familiar with, or simply want an outing that they can share, or even go alone, with other people. Big thumbs up from us.

We really enjoyed the French cooking course. The chef was easily able to adapt the ingredients to cater for a coeliac diet and care was taken to keep things separate. The goats cheese soufflé was fantastic as were the other courses. I would definitely book another course here.

We really enjoyed our evening with our chef Brent and his extensive knowledge of French cuisine. The food we prepared was of excellent quality and the kitchen set up gave all an easy access to their own stove, equipment in easy view of our teacher to keep in time with his instructions. We learned important tips on the traditional cooking methods of classic French food such as the way to render the fat on a duck breast or the world famous Tarte Tatin being dead simple rather than the complication its reputation depicts. The food we ate was delicious. I am recommending to friends to join us next time - maybe Italian not sure yet

This was the simplest cooking class I have ever done. I feel I could make a pad thai or thai beef salad woth ease. With the help of pro bought curry paste could make a hald decent pad thai.

The instructor was good too. I learnt a few things. There is wild ginger - who knew?

The only thing is other cooking courses ive done the food comes out restaurant quality. Though the level of complexity was huge. Some of this finished product lacked a professional kick, but then again it was just so easy.

I learnt so much in this class! I thought I was vaguely competent with knifes in the kitchen before the class (but occasionally still knocked a finger) . From the first few minutes (of learning the grip) I knew that I’d feel more confident and never imagined I’d be trying some of the skills the instructor taught. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to cut down their prep time in the kitchen or feel more confident using sharp knifes.

The teacher was funny and witty; and provided a good explanation of how to do every step when you asked him. He was also very good at his craft, and made everything look effortless. Gave great, concise instructions which broke everything down well.

The venue was good, with good equipment and clean facilities. The whole experience was great value for money, since you also got to take home any food that was prepared which you did not manage to eat!

We learnt how to prepare several dishes from chicken saltimbocca to eggplant parmigiana. It was great fun as well, meeting some new people at the class.

My very first cooking class. overall I enjoyed the experience as I was paired with a stranger I was a bit apprehensive with that persons preference in flavors and tastes so was a bit reluctant to express my overall views, in was it to salty/sweet/savory etc.
Yes the teacher pointed out and mentioned briefly what to add. You adjust the flavors/ingredients to your taste preferences. Just I personally would have liked a bit more info (possibly in writing) in what to add in trying to adjust the tastes (ie: how to recover a meal, if it is to sweet/salty/flavorless/etc).
It was interesting that at the time I felt the Mussaman curry was a bit to sweet, but eating the left overs that night found it far better, possibly because the flavors developed

Excellent teacher. Disappointed that we did not make the classic French Eclairs as the name denoted. We used fruit to decorate eclairs. Never before have I seen French chocolate eclairs decorated with fruit.
Also, missed out on the custard making, which was, again, disappointing.

Chef Paul was a fantastic instructor! He explained the different processes thoroughly and was always open to take questions. The content was great, access to recipes was very convenient, he encouraged us to take photos of different steps of the meals, and explained the different tools and spices used. The food was delicious and there is no better way to learn than through example - the best one I've seen was explaining the cuts from brisket, and then tasting them to SEE how they differed under the same cooking time/heat/conditions. I would absolutely love to take more classes through the school!

My partner Terry and I thoroughly enjoyed our vegetarian cooking class with Paul last night. What a great teacher he is! So knowledgeable on technique and nutrition. We learnt so much from Paul on how to cook well (e.g., on ingredients, how to detect freshness, which oils and spices & the right temperature to use, how to cut corners and make cooking easy). The atmosphere was very conducive to students doing the cooking and to the teacher demonstrating. The meals we made were super delicious. Everything was very generously provided (including wine for those who wanted it). We ate the delicious food we cooked - and there was plenty to take home! The produce we had was high quality - and delicious. The recipes we did were easy enough to follow (with good instruction to help us along), but not too easy - so we had to keep focused to produce a tasty meal for ourselves.
You eat exactly what you cook - and we were pretty happy with what we created - as was everyone else.
Class sizes are fine and Brett was able to keep a good eye on how we were all doing, and give necessary pointers at the right time. Great fun and good learning.

We had an amazing time in our Terrific Taco class. Brett is a great teacher and we enjoyed his class a lot. Coming into the class I was used to small knives (generally quite blunt) and was actually a little afraid of big sharp knives. Well I'm a changed person now. It's all in the hold and control. I never thought I would be so happy with chopping. Fabulous class. Would highly recommend. Paul was wonderful and knew his stuff. Class is 1.5 hours but easily could go on 2 hours with the many questions. The chicken salad is divine too.

Our teacher Pat was very clear and encouraged us to enjoy the experience along the way by tasting as we cooked. All the preparation of ingredients for the 3 meals were perfect and very neatly arranged. Every step was explained and steps were demonstrated when necessary for clarity. We had such a wonderful experience by joining the meat lovers class run by Paul. He is so experienced and patient on demonstration. Had a lot of meat and even came home with 2 contains meat. Thanks Paul! Just one point to mention: we don't know lots of terminology during the class we are not native speakers, which made it a bit hard for us to fully follow the instruction. My 16 year old son and I thoroughly enjoyed Paul's class. We enjoyed learning about the science of the food and cooking methods, equipment and timing. Venue was open, airy, comfortable. We tucked into delicious salmon, pulled pork burger, ribs,brisket, salads, slaw and corn. There were also some to take home also. I recommend anyone looking to elevate their bbq techniques and to get the most value out of your cooking at home, to give this class a go.

So much more than I could have expected.
I thought that it would just be something new to experience, mark it off a bucket list item and just maybe get a few tips in the kitchen.
But no, it was so much more. Beside learning some key techniques and learning to cook new foods never attempted before and being able to ask just about any question, if felt more like a social get together with a bit of education thrown in.
But the real surprise was at the end, when I found that the food I cooked out most restaurants to shame. Who would have thought, I could cook as good as a chef.

We had a great experience at the Taste of Tuscany cooking class at Sydney Cooking School. We learned how to make a wide range of Italian dishes, such as Focaccia, Chicken Saltimbocca, Eggplant Parmigiana and Tiramisu. Along the way, our teacher Brett gave us some great general cooking tips and kept it fun and interesting. He was very personable and catered for the range of abilities in the class with encouragement and humour. It was also good to hear about his experiences working in France. At the end, we sat down and ate our creations with some good quality wine and conversation. There was so much food that we had doggie bags to take home! Everything, including ingredients, equipment and wine is provided for you. Overall I found that it was great value for money and I’d highly recommend to anyone, especially those who are craving a trip to Tuscany!

Good atmosphere and lively personality from teacher. The most hands on thing is the tortilla making, but other things are already done for you to make the process easier/quicker. This means the rest of the hands on activities are mostly just chopping. Some got to cook things for salsas but that won’t be the experience for all. Everything turned out great!

I grew up in a household that loved to cook. Most of the fundamentals were taught to me at a young age when I used to assist my parents with prep work. Fast forward twenty years and I've started cooking at home for my family and found myself questioning my knowledge on some of the basics (eg. am I honing this japanese knife correctly; is there a faster way to dice this onion; etc). This class reinforced what I was taught when I was in my youth which were just the basics plus I learned a few new tricks (preparing julienned capsicum and carrots). The instructor was super nice and helpful. Would recommend this class to anyone that wants to learn how to handle a knife safely in the kitchen; learn a few tricks; or speed up their prep work. Nothing fancy. Just the basics which is more than most people have under their belt!

Fantastic experience. I took my dad to the French Eclair Making Class as a birthday gift and we loved it. Our teacher was very welcoming, had everything set up for ease and efficiency, and took us through the process in an engaging way. She gave us some freedom but also helped to perfect our very own eclairs. I never thought I’d be able to create something so special, but now I’ve added eclairs to the repertoire! The almond spread eclair was the standout, absolutely delicious.

We arrived with 5 mins to spare but the directions were great. We learnt about how Pat learned how to make her recipes and adapt them for her family and now for her students. Contextually while I am not a novice and generally a solid and slightly adventurous cook in a BBQ, I have never learnt the basics and have a real passion for learning how to cook “properly”. The Adult Cooking Course for Beginners proved to be perfect for me.
It always starts with the teacher and Paul was just great - personable, knowledgeable, practical, understanding and patient. For me personally his explanation of the “why” / the science behind what we were doing helped to cement what we were learning.
As to the content, it was a great introduction by taking a walk through of all the basics from knife skills to the different cooking techniques and mediums for a good selection of meals, with hands on participation rather than just observation.
The best measure of the quality of the course for me is that it fuelled my desire to cook more frequently, have the confidence to try more recipes, and to practice the techniques, and to want to take more of the classes that the school offers.

I paid $145 for this class and was excited to do it but became very sick suddenly on the day of the class, if I'd have gone I wouldn't have been able to participate properly and would have made everyone else sick too so before the class I called to say I couldn't come, it was a weekend so the office was closed. I left a voice mail which clearly showed I was sick as barely had any voice and sent a msg to the teacher. I didn't hear anything back about my request to reschedule days later so I called. I was told I couldn't get a refund or reschedule the class and they were keeping my money because they already had the ingredients set up for me. I'm very disappointed in this company not having any compassion for peoples situations. We can't control when we get sick. So buyer beware, if anything happens so you can't make your class they will rob you.

The teacher was fantastic and the class was intimately sized so we all had chances to be involved in the demonstrations (we also made our own individual desserts). We learnt a lot about different techniques for the desserts in the class, but also how to expand and apply those techniques to other types of desserts. Very accessible and beginner-intermediate friendly (I bake a lot but my partner rarely does and worked well for us both). And of course, the desserts were delicious!

We booked a group session for 8 and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves! Our teacher was fun, engaging and informative. We made fresh pasta to take home, pork tortellini, spinach and ricotta gnocchi cooked in burnt butter and rosemary and pumpkin and ricotta ravioli all of which tasted absolutely beautiful.

The class was great! The venue was extremely well appointed and the instructor clear and concise with directions. Whilst the class was suitable for the novice, there were still lots of handy tips for those who have baked at home for many years. Five “Delicious Desserts” were made in the class: Chocolate Fondant (my favourite), Lemon tart with Italian meringue, Sticky Date pudding, Orange Panna Cotta with caramel crumbs and a Pear crumble. I would highly recommend this class; the most organised and professionally presented class that I have attended.

The presenter was Paul, who delivered his presentation in a format that was easy to follow. The food provided was top class and I very much enjoyed learning a new way to cook. The venue was spotless, very clean and pleasant. Everything was provided, even aprons. I have attended 5 different classes over the last couple of years and enjoyed all of them. From Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) to cooking Seafood, Thai food and Meat cooked to Perfection, I highly recommend Class Bento and look forward to my next venture, the Dumpling making class next month.

Such a fun class. Chef Ken was so funny and kind. He made sure everyone was looked after and shared a lot of information about Japanese cooking as well as some Japanese food history. The food was delicious. Everything was provided so you literally just need to bring yourself. I recommend heading to the venue early as parking in the area can get busy on the weekends. What drew me to this class for my daughter and I was the fact that it was traditional Greek food. Not fancy stuff people don’t eat. Ana was great in accomodating my daughter and having a sense of belonging.
Easy spot to get to as well with public transport (as we leave the car at home for trips out like this).
Look forward to more classes like this. Keep up the passion Ana!

Such a great experience. Our Head Chef was Brett and he was amazing! He shared with us his great career experiences and we learnt really practical tips on cooking what - luckily - turned out to be, a delicious 3 course French cuisine delight.
Would definitely do this again for another French menu, or one of Sydney Cooking Schools other classes (like BBQ or dumplings).
The School is tucked away in Neutral Bay, but we made a night of it by staying in Sydney and enjoying VIVID - double bonus.

I have had a long connection with Japan and everything Japanese, so I booked the Japanese street food class with 3 of my friends.
Ken, our instructor was excellent. He was entertaining, very knowledgeable, beautifully prepared and he ensured every member of the group really enjoyed the class.
The ingredients were fresh, beautifully arranged and provided.
Using the narrow grill outside was fun and the yakitori was amazing. My friends have not stopped talking about okonomiyaki, they loved it.
I would recommend Ken's classes to anyone keen to develop Japanese cooking skills.

Pat was really great! Everything was prepared and organised on a tray so we could focus on the cooking more. She showed us some great knife techniques and gave us tips to store food to prevent food waste! We also got lots of practical tips which will really help us in all kinds of cooking.

This was a really fun class! We cooked teriyaki sauce from scratch, then put it on chicken skewers which we grilled, we did deep fried pork schnitzels, and my favourite was the okonomiyaki pancake. All food was provided, and the class moved a good speed allowing everyone to keep up and participate. The teacher was authentic and very considerate, and we got to eat everything we made. Tip: arrive hungry! It was a fun way to spend 2.5-3 hours and I'd highly recommend it!

We thoroughly enjoyed our Japanese cooking class with Chef Ken. He was very personable, humorous and made following along easy he was patient with anyone that needed a little more instruction or time. The venue was well equipped however we found the classroom very warm as it was open at the back for bbq'ing and the humidity that day was out of control and aircon didn't seem to help. The recipes we cooked were delicious and will be easy to replicate at home. The recipe notes are well written and easy to follow so we will definitely be eating more Japanese Street Food at home from now on.

Our teacher, Paul, was fantastic. Super friendly, clear, easy to follow his instructions and knowledgeable. Was great to have a small class (only 8 of us) which made it bit easier to follow and for Paul to check in on each pair throughout. We made some gnocchi on the night which was absolutely amazing and got heaps of pasta that we made to take home (still getting through it 5 days later!).
We definitely will come back to try another cuisine. The whole experience with Sydney Cooking School was amazing from the communication, responsiveness and customer service prior to the class as well as on the night.

Ken was a fabulous fun teacher. He explained each process thoroughly demonstrating every step along the way & we enjoyed our dumplings immensely. The room was well set up & clean. All students were able to follow instructions with ease under his guidance. All the ingredients were fresh. The venue was amazing, so much larger than I expected.

This was such a great class! Paul is an amazing teacher and was able to provide a casual and fun environment for everyone. Even my niece, who can be a little shy at times, went out the front of the entire class to help him out. Cannot recommend this class enough, excited to try another one soon!

This was a great class. the teacher was so knwlegdebale and i learnt so much. I went as a solo cooker and they were so welcoming that I did not feel like the odd one out. The food was amazing and the chef was able to give practicale advice for a variety of kitchens. the cooking was so much fun and then the social dinner afterwards was a bonus.

His personal anecdotes from his professional experiences made the content interesting and engaging, and the small setting was perfect for being involved. We were collected by a very friendly and efficient staff member who guided us through a labyrinth of well equipped and super clean professional looking kitchens. Our Chef, Ken, was amazing. The dumpling making class was fun but informative. I’ve picked up so many tips from him; my favourite is to rest the gyoza for a few minutes after turning the heat off to allow the gyoza to continue ‘crisping’ and to release itself from the pan.

We were provided with everything we needed for the class; the school was very generous with the quality and quantity of their ingredients. I had a fun day and would highly recommend this class to anyone.

We did the vegan cooking class. All the materials and utensils provided were really good quality.
We managed to get through quite a few recipes which were flavourful and interesting, while being simple to make.
The instructor was very friendly and inviting. He was very willing to share his approach to food and ways we could make the dish our own.

Overall it was a good night with just the right amount of people so not to be too overcrowded. Would come again.

Very good indeed. The insights into how to cook the spices was invaluable. Paul was clear, informative and entertaining. The flavours of the food we cooked were outstanding and far superior to any local restaurants and cafes my family attend. We cooked our own Daal and contributed to cooking the other dishes. Maybe a little more 'hands-on' would be better. Overall, this is excellent. Thank-you Paul for a great night of learning and cooking and eating.

We did the curry creations class with Paul. We have done a few cooking classes in Australia and overseas. This was thoroughly enjoyable and with a really tasty result. Really loved the dahl and the barramundi red curry. Paul was an excellent teacher, explaining the produce, spices, etc and how to use them to develop flavour and complexity. He also answered all questions and was very knowledgeable as a professional chef. After cooking we sat and ate together with a glass of wine. Lovely! We could also take leftovers home so nothing was wasted. Would recommend this class to those wanting to learn or just to try something new.

The teacher was absolutely amazing in this class and I think that's what made the experience for us both. Not only was he only kind and patient, he was also very fun and would often joke with us all. the food we cooked turned out delicious too, and the instructions were all super easy to follow. Wow what a great experience! Our chef Ken was fantastic, he explained the process and techniques very clearly and was patient with our slightly rowdy group. He made it fun and educational for everyone even though we were all at different skill levels. The venue was perfect, the room had plenty of space and was immaculate with all the equipment we needed and lots of natural light. Covid safe precautions were great, we all felt very comfortable and Ken made an extra effort for one of our group with food allergies. This was excellent value for money, we ran over time so we got a lot of teaching and fun for a very reasonable price. I can safely say I will be making dumplings at home all the time now and am very confident after this excellent class. Thanks again, wouldn't have changed anything! :)

Really great class. Clear instructions and some delicious recipes that we got to enjoy at the end of the class - the gnocchi we made is going to be on my go-to dinner party menu! Excited to cook the pasta we made.
All and all a great class but I think the class would have been even better if we got some recipes to put with the fresh pasta we made so we could give them a go when we got home. Maybe we could have even made a fresh tomato sauce or something whilst in the class to take home.

Firstly, we were not fully prepared for the full extent of the menu and were very pleasantly surprised.
In two hours we learnt (and had a hand in) five different seafood dishes using five different types of fish / crustaceans.
Paul, our teacher, was fantastic. He explained things very well and gave many great little tips. He also had a good sense of humour.
The quality of the seafood was excellent and a couple of glasses of complimentary wine paired very well!
My only 'criticism' is that the website description does not do the class justice.
We will definitely be booking for further classes.

I booked this class for my wife and I as we love eating dumplings. The welcome, coffee and chef Ken’s knowledge and support was first class. All of the people who attended the class loved the food we made and the wine that went with it. I will definitely book another class there very soon.

This was a great activity. The equipment & food was provided. Everything ran smoothly. Brett was a great teacher. He demonstrated the techniques, gave tips and helped us wherever possible. The pasta and gnocchi were kept simple to prepare and we were given a chance to eat the gnocchi and take home the pasta. All in all, it was a great experience.

Learnt a lot about food handling and general safety. learn the best ways to cook different types of proteins. Due to COVID19 the classes are smaller to make things more controlled. everyone was able to wash their hands and sanitise frequently. Ate some lovely food at the end of the course from what we prepared. my only negative criticism is that there wasn't room for social distancing when being seated on the table.

My friends and I had a great time at the pasta and gnocchi class! The teacher was very knowledgeable, friendly and approachable, and made the whole experience fun. We made a few different types of pasta and gnocchi, which were all so delicious. We were given the recipes to take home, as well as our own hand made pasta. The venue was COVID safe so we were all physically distanced and hand hygiene was strongly encouraged throughout the evening. Overall, great experience!

she taught us how to deal with the more exotic ingredients and where to buy them.she engaged us all, and the food was very delicious.
she gave alternatives to some parts of the recipes if they might be very spicy.i helped prepare the second helping of Green salad, after she had demonstrated this.
i would definitely recommend this experience.

My partner and I attended the Very Vegetarian cooking course on 09/01/20 with Paul as our teacher. We were both very impressed by his culinary knowledge and approachability to ask questions.

All materials and ingredients were provided and some were prepared to help the speed of the cooking process. Paul made sure to go through how to prepare those items too. The recipes were easy to follow and absolutely delicious.

Also, we both especially enjoyed the simple pro tips of preparing certain ingredients more efficiently by Paul.

This was such a fun class! We learned how to make four different types of dumplings including gyoza and wonton PLUS two delicious dipping sauces. Our teacher was so friendly and supportive throughout the class. I cannot wait to try making these dishes again at home.

The room was all set up when we got there and there was a good variety of options in terms of the food and Ken said he would make accomodations for any allergies or preferences. Ken was patient and informative and we learnt how to make 3 kinds of dumplings and 2 sauces. Would recommend this class to anyone who likes eating dumplings

Our street food Japanese cooking class with Ken was so much fun It definitely exceeded our expectations and was a great birthday present for my husband.
